A founder's life is different every single day. The schedule is entirely dependent on what the startup needs. Since it's already 4-5 months, I have finally achieved some version of a daily routine. Hence, I thought of sharing with you all what my day looks like at Invact Metaversity.
A startup is like a baby.
In a corporate job, you are done with the day's work and switch off your laptop at a specific time. There is a clear distinction between work and life. That line seems to stop existing when you are a startup founder. You are always working, and there's no OFF button. Apart from the 6 hours of sleep, you invest all your time into the startup. You work from your office and home and even from cabs. Believe it or not, I have taken interview calls while riding cabs.
A startup is like a baby. Just like a newborn, it needs care and attention. The moment the baby does not get attention, it starts crying. It does not let the parents sleep. But since it's your baby, you love it with all your heart and will not have it any other way. That's exactly how it is with startups.
The tech-enabled product founder
I mostly spend my mornings and evenings in meetings and taking interviews. I have covered hiring at Invact in detail in a previous newsletter.
The prime role that I play at Invact is in collaboration and strategy. I have to talk with vendors and companies to get favourable deals. As a tech startup, you bleed a lot of money on hosting, DevOps, servers, etc. You want to save these costs because every penny saved is every penny earned. One such deal that has helped us immensely is the Microsoft for Startups, where we got credits for Azure and other tools.
The CTO
Now comes the piece of the Chief Technology Officer. In all honesty, I haven't pushed a PR in a long time. I review PRs and work on the architecture. But in my opinion, until you push a PR, you do not get your hands dirty.
The team has established the best code quality measures, code review systems and architecture review systems. With exceptional engineers at work, the code does not suffer at all. However, after a long career spent pushing code, the day feels incomplete without it. Yet again, I have to put the baby's needs ahead of my personal needs. And the baby needs me more as a leader and a founder than it needs me as a developer.
Till next time
I hope you now have some idea of how I spend my day at Invact. I know it's not a clear, pretty picture because there isn't one. Every day is different. Every day demands something new. But I must say I love it as is, and I wouldn't change absolutely anything.
If there's anything I may have missed out on, please let me know in the comments below or on Twitter. I would love to answer your questions. And in the meantime, share and subscribe to the newsletter to not miss out on any future issues.
Hi Tanay,
Can you share your views on the importance of sleep and how to decide on the number of hours of sleep. I have been sleeping only 6 hours since a long time now and feel completely fresh during the day. But nowadays I get confused a lot on seeing posts, blogs etc on the internet that stress on 8 hours sleep to ensure long term health. Just wanted to know your opinion on this.
I have subscribed many high quality newsletters, but everytime these emails slide into my inbox I mark them as starred and procastinate to read them, but this is not the case with tanay's newsletters. I can't stop the urge to consume the content as soon as I receive it, very strange right!!? Humko bhi sikhado bhayya eise wala skills 🥲😂.
